Introducing Snarkitecture
Co-founded by Alex Mustonen and today led by him, Snarkitecture is a New York-based creative studio that operates at the intersection of art, architecture and design. Their work is defined by minimalist precision, material storytelling and a restless curiosity - a commitment to revealing something unexpected within the familiar.
There is always more to a Snarkitecture piece than first meets the eye. Look closer, and the work reveals itself. A surface becomes a portal. A form becomes a question. The ordinary becomes something else entirely.
That instinct - to look closer, to find more - is one we recognise. It is the instinct of every person who has ever taken a second sip of Bowmore single malt whisky and discovered something they hadn't noticed before.
It is why this collaboration felt not just right, but inevitable.
From New York to Islay
To begin the creative process, Snarkitecture co-founder Alex Mustonen travelled from New York to Bowmore's No.1 Vaults on Islay - one of the oldest maturation warehouses in Scotland, built below sea level on the shores of Loch Indaal.
What he found there shaped everything that followed.
That journey would go on to shape the Captivo Collection and its central ideas of threshold and passage - expressed through portal-like forms that invite discovery and reflect the journey of each whisky from its creation decades ago to its reveal today.
The hidden depths of the Bowmore distillery. The wild, irregular landscape of the island. The carved voids and unexpected openings that define Islay's character. The way light moves through the vaults, slow and deliberate, the way time moves through whisky.
Mustonen arrived as a designer. He left with something harder to define - an understanding of what Bowmore is, not just what it looks like. That understanding became the foundation for the design work that followed.
